The Dual Dimensions of Socrates'Concept of Temperance:Based on the Analysis of Memorabilia and Charmides

Abstract
Socrates'concept of"temperance"(sōphrosynē)constitutes a pivotal element in ancient Greek ethical thought.Xenophon's Memorabilia and Plato's Charmides offer distinct hermeneutical frameworks for its interpretation.The Memorabilia emphasizes temperance as applied wisdom within quotidian existence,portraying Socratic teachings through paradigmatic words and deeds that illuminate its practical orientation and normative guidance for individual conduct.Here,temperance manifests not merely as personal virtue cultivation but also as an immanent principle in constructing the ideal polis.In contrast,the Charmides engages in deeper metaphysical inquiry,situating temperance within an ontological framework that crystallizes Socratic ethics into a humanistic philosophical paradigm.While diverging in methodological emphasis the former prioritizing concrete behavioral norms,the latter emphasizing speculative ontology both texts collectively affirm temperance's dual ethical significance:as a practical maxim for cultivating rational lifestyles,and more profoundly,as the aretaic foundation for the ontology of eudaimonia.关键词
