Effects of γ-rays at Different Mutagenic Doses on the Germination of Sugar Beet Seeds

Abstract
[Objective]Sugar beet is an important economic and sugar crop in China.However,the elite sugar beet germplasm resources in our country are limited.Radiation mutagenesis breeding can increase the number of elite sugar beet germplasm resources.[Methods]γ radiation doses of 0,90,140,190,240,290,340,390 and 440 Gy were used to induce mutation in multigerm'W5'and monogerm'ZD5-O'sugar beet seeds,and the effects of different mutagenic doses of γ radiation on beet seed germination were investigated,hoping to find the appropriate half-lethal dose.[Results]Mutagenized beet seeds exhibited various abnormalities including deformity,yellowing,and abnormal germination patterns such as buds with no roots,roots with no buds,or failure to germinate.Both multigerm and monogerm mutant beet seeds showed significantly reduced germination rates and vigor.Through constructing a polynomial function using lethal dose curves,we determined the median lethal doses(LD50)to be 241.65 Gy for multigerm beet'W5'seeds and 234.96 Gy for monogerm beet'ZD5-O'seeds.[Conclusion]γ-rays with different irradiation doses had different effects on the germination of sugar beet seeds,and sugar beet seeds with different embryogenic properties had different semi-lethal doses under γ-ray irradiation.This experiment provides an important reference for the mutagenesis breeding of sugar beets,helps to optimize the breeding plan and improve breeding efficiency,and offers a reference for the subsequent creation of elite sugar beet germplasm resources through mutagenesis breeding.关键词
