Development Status and Recommendations for Sugarcane Seed Industry in China

Abstract
Sugarcane,the world's largest sugar crop,accounts for 87%of China's total sugar production,making the development of sugarcane seed industry crucial to national sugar supply security.This paper reviews the global status of sugarcane seed industry,systematically analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of China's sugarcane seed industry,and proposes targeted development recommendations.China has established the world's largest sugarcane germplasm resource garden,with high-yield and high-sugar new variety breeding reaching international top levels.Significant breakthroughs have been achieved in high-sugar parent creation,controllable hybrid breeding sources,efficient breeding technology development,and the promotion of fifth-generation main varieties.In successive generations of variety improvement,the fifth-generation variety improvement has for the first time achieved sustained and stable global average yield surpassing.However,China's sugarcane seed industry still faces challenges such as insufficient germplasm resource collection and identification,limited application of modern biotechnology,inadequate mechanization-friendly variety breeding,and insufficient adoption of virus-free seedlings.Based on this,recommendations are proposed to strengthen germplasm resource identification and creation,promote the implementation of modern breeding technologies,accelerate mechanization-friendly variety breeding,and increase the promotion of virus-free seedlings,providing theoretical references for the high-quality development of China's sugarcane seed industry.关键词
