Study on Changes in the Consumption Structure of Sugar and Corn-Based Sweeteners in the United States:Substitution or Reversal?

Abstract
[Objective]This study investigated the"reversal"phenomenon in the consumption structure of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup(HFCS)in the United States after 2010 and its driving factors,aiming to provide insights for the global sweetener market transformation.[Methods]Based on consumption data of U.S.sugar and corn sweeteners from 2010 to 2024,the evolution trajectory was analyzed from multiple dimensions,including total volume,structure,per capita consumption,regional distribution,and seasonal characteristics.The driving mechanisms were examined by integrating health perceptions,corporate strategy,relative prices,and industrial policy.[Results]Total U.S.sugar consumption showed fluctuating growth,with industrial consumption as the core driver,among which sugar usage in the beverage industry increased by 110%.Consumption exhibited seasonal characteristics(high in summer and low in winter)and a regional pattern dominated by the Mid-North and South regions.Per capita sugar consumption remained stable at a high level,approximately 1.46 times the global average.During the same period,the total consumption of corn sweeteners decreased by 15%,primarily driven by a roughly 20%decline in HFCS consumption,leading per capita sugar consumption to surpass that of corn sweeteners after 2010.[Conclusion]The"reversal"in the U.S.sweetener consumption structure post-2010 resulted from the combined effects of shifting health perceptions guiding consumer preferences,strategic product reformulation by beverage companies,changes in the relative prices of sweeteners,and domestic sugar protection policies.关键词
