Item analysis of the Symptom Checklist 90 among university and middle school students in Guangdong Province

Abstract
Objective:To analyze and evaluate the items of the Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90)in order to provide empirical evidence for items screening and scale simplification.Methods:A total of 5 871 middle school and college students were completed the SCL-90.Item analysis was conducted using four methods from classical test theory(CTT)-variability,correlation coefficient,factor analysis and Cronbach coefficient-as well as three meth-ods from item response theory(IRT)-difficulty,discrimination and average information.Results:Under CTT analy-sis,63 items of the SCL-90 met the criteria in three or more methods,while 27 items required improvement.Under IRT analysis,42 items satisfied all three methods,and 48 items needed improvement.A total of 48 items failed to meet the criteria in six or more methods when combining the results of CTT and IRT.Conclusion:A considerable number of items of the SCL-90 demonstrated inadequate psychometric properties and should be revised or deleted to improve the efficiency and validity of the scale.关键词
