The medical humanistic value and implications of medical social work at Peking Union Medical College Hospital in the 1920s

Abstract
The technicist tendency in clinical medicine and the weak humanistic care for patients have become significant issues in the construction of medical humanities currently.Although policies emphasize the importance of medical social work in promoting the construction of medical humanities,its value in integrating social resources and alleviating patients'multi-dimensional predicaments has still not been fully recognized.Focusing on the work practice of the social service department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital in the 1920s,this paper sorted out and analyzed the original documents,such as the 1927-1929 Annual Report of the Social Service Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital,exploring how medical social work promotes the reconstruction of patients'social life through systematic intervention.The study found that the social service department broke through the biological limitations of modern medicine,viewing disease as a"deviation from the social life trajectory".By constructing a full-chain service model covering economic assistance,psychological intervention,and livelihood support,it aimed to realize the reintegration of patients into society,profoundly embodying the professional value of medical social work in helping people and themselves.Its four-stage practical model of"social investigation-social diagnosis-social treatment-social life reconstruction"predated the"bio-psycho-social"medical model by nearly half a century.This historical practice not only interprets the medical humanistic value with the concept of holistic care but also provides valuable local experience and inspiration for the development of contemporary medical social work.关键词
