Abstract

Multi-strand tundishes often exhibit significant residence time variations among strands due to their complex structures,adversely affecting molten steel cleanliness.This study takes a ten-strand symmetrical industrial tundish as the research object,employing a combined approach of CFD numerical simulation and 1∶2 scale water model experiments to optimize the internal flow control devices for improved billet quality.A three-dimensional non-isothermal CFD model was established using the standard k-ε turbulence model and the Lagrangian discrete phase model to track 20-80 μm alumina(Al2O3)inclusions,with heat losses characterized by specified heat fluxes through the slag layer,sidewalls,and bottom.Based on the Froude similarity criterion,a transparent water model was constructed,and particle image velocimetry(PIV)was employed to validate the flow field at typical cross-sections.Six flow control configurations(benchmark;multi-hole baffle;large/small L-type baffle;dam-weir structure;and inclined baffle)were evaluated under both normal and high casting speed conditions.The results indicate that the large L-type baffle significantly increases the plug flow volume fraction,reduces the dead zone volume fraction,and improves the uniformity of residence time distribution(RTD)among the strands.With this configuration,the dead zone volume decreases from 26.0%in the benchmark scheme to 16.4%,while the plug flow volume increases from 11.0%to 25.9%.The PIV measurements show good agreement with the numerical simulations,validating the reliability of the model.The large L-type baffle is thus recommended as the optimal flow control device for ten-strand symmetrical tundishes,providing both theoretical basis and engineering guidance for the optimization of similar tundish designs.
