An Inquiry into Wang Ang's Doctrine of"Slippery Essence Caused by the Kernel"in Cornus Officinalis

Abstract
Cornus officinalis(Shanzhuyu)is a renowned traditional Chinese medicinal material,which has been used clinically since ancient times for its effects in tonifying the liver and kidneys,and inducing astringency.In classi-cal herbal,records frequently mention that the kernel of Cornus officinalis must be removed before use.The statement by the renowned Qing Dynasty physician Wang Ang in his Ben Cao Bei Yaothat"the kernel may cause spermatorrhea(hua jing),hence it is removed"has been particularly influential.This viewpoint not only embodies the theoretical principle in Chinese medicine processing of"removing non-medicinal parts"but also reflects the deep understand-ing ancient physicians had regarding the differential properties of various parts of a medicinal substance.However,with the increasing scarcity of modern medicinal resources and the continuous advancement of research methods,the rationality of the traditional practice of removing the kernel from Cornus officinalis has become a focus of academic debate.This paper systematically examines the historical origins,scientific connotation,and clinical guiding value of Wang Ang's theory regarding the kernel of Cornus officinalis by reviewing historical literature and integrating modern research findings.关键词
