The Dual Structural Effect:A New Explanation of Social Class Identification in China

Abstract
Chinese modernization is a form of modernization characterized by the coordinated development of material and spiritual civilization.Based on the data of the six waves from the Chinese Social Survey(CSS)conducted between 2011 and 2021,this study proposes a new explanatory framework for the social class identification based on the relationship between income and housing status.By introducing the concept of income-housing status inconsistency,the study examines the systematic effects of mismatches in status-related resources on Chinese residents' social class identification.The findings show that income-housing status inconsistency has strong explanatory power in accounting for social class identification,primarily through the negative effects of mismatches between income and housing status.Further analyses indicate that these effects vary across social groups and are conditioned by the factors such as macroeconomic development,gendered divisions of labor,and regional housing prices.关键词
