Research and Applications of Heavy Ion Irradiation in Biomedicine

Abstract
Heavy ion irradiation technology is transitioning from an advanced modality for tumor radiothera-py to a comprehensive platform for biomedical research and development.Its core principle leverages the precise energy deposition of the Bragg peak and complex DNA damage mechanism induced by high linear energy transfer,enabling efficient and accurate modulation of biological targets.In the medical field,it has demonstrated significantefficacy in treating refractory tumors,FLASH ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy,and radiotherapycombined with immunotherapy.In biomanufacturing and virology,its high linear energy transfer characteristics make it a key tool for vaccine inactivation,screening of virus-host interactions,and improvement of industrial microbial strains.Despite its promise,widespread application faces challenges such as high equipment costs and lack of operational standardization.Future development focuses on accelerator miniaturization,optimization aided by artificial intelligence,and convergence with synthetic biology.This review systematically summarizes the physical and biological mechanisms of heavy ion technology,its application prospects in biomedicine,and its industrial potential in an interdisciplinary context.关键词
