Abstract

Infrastructure serves as the geotechnical foundation supporting social production and daily life,and its safety is directly related to social stability and the quality of human living environments.As the fundamental load-bearing and hazard-bearing medium of infrastructure,rock and soil masses are products of long-term natural evolution,and their stability is therefore a key factor controlling the safety of geotechnical engineering systems.Owing to their natural origin,strong concealment,and inherent uncertainty,it remains extremely challenging to obtain reliable information on the progressive deformation and failure processes of rock and soil masses.Starting from the historical evolution of in situ observation technologies for geomaterials,this study introduces the concept of multi-physical-field sensing of rock and soil masses,emphasizing that sensing represents the highest level of geotechnical observation,with continuous spatiotemporal characterization as its most prominent feature.The basic principles and technical advantages of 3Ds distributed optical fiber sensing technology are then presented,which is currently regarded as one of the most effective approaches for achieving true geo-sensing.Furthermore,the fundamental framework of a geo-sensing fiber optic network(GFOSN)constructed based on geological boreholes is proposed.It is pointed out that geological boreholes distributed throughout the subsurface constitute a valuable but largely underutilized monitoring resource,as the majority of these boreholes are backfilled or abandoned after drilling,resulting in a significant waste of monitoring potential.Finally,the application of the GFOSN in regional-scale land subsidence monitoring is introduced,demonstrating its capability for long-term,continuous,and in-depth geotechnical observation.This study advocates the systematic establishment of a geo-sensing fiber optic network,which is expected to provide an important technological pathway for ensuring the safe and sustainable operation of large-scale infrastructure systems.
