Identification of Mid-Holocene environmental evolution and sedimentary records of extreme events at the Zhushanwan Site in the Yaojiang River Valley
摘要
Abstract
The Yaojiang River Valley Plain on the southern coast of Hangzhou Bay nurtured the splendid Hemudu Culture, and this area is highly sensitive to climate and sea level fluctuations. How the Neolithic inhabitants adapted to this vulnerable environment is a hot issue in environmental archaeology.Taking the Zhushanwan Site, excavated in the northeastern part of the Yaojiang River Valley Plain,as the research object, this paper conducted AMS14C dating, grain size analysis, and geochemical element analysis to try to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental evolution and identify sedimentary records of extreme events. The results show that during the late Hemudu Culture period, the site area was always a coastal tidal wetland environment, with topography sloping distinctly downward from north to south. The strata in the low-lying area in the southern part of the site record two phases of fluvial flooding events accompanied by seawater intrusion during 5.2~4.9 cal.ka BP,which should be rapid deposits during typhoon events. The Neolithic inhabitants utilized the paleotopography and settled in areas with slightly higher elevation, reflecting their flexible adaptability to the coastal lowland environment. However,at the end of the Hemudu Culture, the northern area of the site also suffered obvious seawater intrusion, leading to the abandonment of the settlement.关键词
