Identifying Key Factors and Influence Pathways of Internet Users'Rumor Spreading Behavior:A Mixed-Method Approach

Abstract
The study aims to explore key influencing factors and influencing paths of rumor spreading behaviors of Internet users,and to provide theoretical references and practical experiences for the government as well as the public to deal with rumor spreading and rumor management.Meta-analysis is conducted on 34 Chinese and English literatures based on systematic literature screening,obtaining a total of 91 effect values and 38 296 samples,followed by effect merging hypothesis testing to obtain significant influencing factor variables.At the same time,moderated effects are explored.fsQCA is conducted in conjunction with 50 rumor cases,to explore the influencing paths of the rumor spreading behaviors of Internet users.The results show that communicator identity,emotional trust,risk perception,social relationship,rumor emotionality,information quality,and environmental ambiguity have a critical effect on rumor spreading behavior of Internet users,while research time,survey background,rumor environment,and rumor type also significantly affect such behavior.The group effect can be summarized into three influencing paths:the"risk-defense"driven type,the"deficit-relationship"driven type,and the"relationship-cognition"driven type.关键词
