Abstract
The water conservancy project heritage in Liming Village in Yunyang,Chongqing,is a large-scale and comprehensive ancient rural water conservancy site surviving in the Three Gorges area.Located in a valley surrounded by mountains on three sides,the village has abundant rainfall but uneven seasonal distribution.To address the threat of mountain floods and meet agricultural irrigation needs,local villagers harnessed natural conditions to build a complex water system centered on flood drainage and water storage for irrigation.Among its components,the gully and canal network runs through the valley in a fishbone pattern,fulfilling flood control and drainage functions through hydraulic structures including canal embankment(Hengshan Yan),culverts,terrace drainage ditches,and stone-revetted slopes,in conjunction with natural gullies and incised channels.The pond system,consisting mainly of mountain ponds and level ponds,is scattered across the village.It provides water storage for irrigation while working synergistically with the gully-canal network to achieve integrated storage and drainage.Using a combination of field survey,mapping and surveying,and oral history interviews,this paper systematically clarifies the composition,spatial pattern,and operational mechanism of the water system,and makes a preliminary inference about its construction date.The study shows that the hydraulic works in Liming Village not only reflect the ecological wisdom and engineering capacity of traditional agrarian communities in adapting to complex terrains,but also provide important physical evidence for exploring the history of rural development and the evolution of water conservancy technology in the Three Gorges region.It carries important historical,technical,landscape,and social values.关键词
