Abstract
Destination Culture:Tourism,Museums, and Heritage(1998),a seminal work by Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett,systematically uncovers the implicit political-economic structures and mechanisms of power operation underlying cultural display.Through multiple case studies, the book offers an in-depth analysis of how museums, tourism, and heritage reconstruct cultural meanings through exhibition practices, arguing that"exhibiting"is not merely an act of representation but also a process of meaning production and power negotiation. In this book, the concept of"destination culture"does not refer to the inherent culture of a destination, but rather to a cultural form that is constructed, experienced, and consumed through the active practice of"display"."Exhibiting"is the core mechanism that connects museum displays, tourism experiences, and the reproduction of heritage meaning.Through strategies such as"fragmentation"and"recontextualization",it detaches cultural elements from their original contexts and imbues them with new meanings, ultimately transforming the destination itself into a consumable cultural product. This perspective moves beyond the traditional framework that views destinations as static containers of culture, shifting instead toward an exploration of the dynamic logic of"how display constructs culture and how culture serves the destination".Although the book's organizational structure and certain arguments remain debated, its interdisciplinary perspective and critical analytical approach have profoundly influenced contemporary museology, heritage studies, and cultural criticism. It has provided particularly valuable theoretical frameworks and critical perspectives for research on intangible cultural heritage and cultural display practices in China.关键词
