Abstract

Nickel-based flux-cored wire shows promising application potential in ultra-low-temperature storage tanks,petro-chemical industries,and offshore platforms owing to its high deposition efficiency,good welding adaptability,and excellent weldability.However,due to high technical challenges and relatively low maturity,it remains in the exploratory stage.In this study,the influence of Cr content in the nickel-based flux-cored powder on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the deposited metal was systematically investigated via multi-scale characterization.It was found that when the Cr con-tent in the flux-cored powder ranged from 7.0 wt.%to 13.0 wt.%,the microstructure of the deposited metal was primarily composed of austenitic dendrites,with σ phase and M6C carbides precipitated in the interdendritic regions.The area fraction of precipitates increased from 0.92%to 1.94%.In addition,a considerable number of non-metallic inclusions were observed in the matrix.As the Cr content in the powder increased,the average Charpy impact energy at-196 ℃was significantly en-hanced,rising from 20.0 J to 48.7 J.The improvement in impact toughness at-196 ℃was mainly attributed to changes in the size and distribution of non-metallic inclusions.With increasing Cr content,the average inclusion diameter decreased from 0.85 μm to 0.56 μm,the number fraction of large-sized inclusions decreased from 59.7%to 43.6%,and their volume fraction decreased from 1.32%to 0.55%.Under cryogenic impact loading,large-sized inclusions,serving as potential crack initiation sites in the deposited metal,were identified as the primary cause for the degradation of low-temperature toughness in the weld metal.
