Research on the mechanism of influence of enterprise social media use on team agility:Based on the perspective of transactive memory system theory

Abstract
Team agility has become crucial for the survival and development of enterprises in today's complex and ever-changing business environment.Enterprise Social Media(ESM)is a key digital tool that provides new ways for enterprises to enhance team agility.Consequently,an increasing number of enterprises are now implementing ESM strategies to benefit from it.However,previous studies lack an in-depth exploration of whether and how ESM use affects team agility.This study explored the impact of two dimensions of team ESM use(work-and social-related)on team agility and aimed to provide practical guidance for enterprises to effectively utilize ESM technology to enhance team agility.Furthermore,although the potential of ESM use in knowledge interaction has been recognized,the specific mechanism of action between it and team agility has not been investigated.We argue that ESM use effectively promotes knowledge expertise,coordination,and credibility and enhances team agility.Thus,this study adopted the theory of transactive memory systems to examine how ESM use influences team agility by affecting a team's transactive memory system. We constructed a theoretical model of ESM use,transactive memory systems,and team agility based on relevant literature and current corporate developments and proposed specific research hypotheses.We recruited and screened survey teams that met specific conditions,including minimum work units,long-term working relationships,single formal leaders,and inter-team collaboration,online to validate the model.We included teams of at least three people who used ESM for daily office work.Participants were required to understand mainstream ESM and were paired with a survey of team members and direct leaders.After screening,we recruited 90 survey teams consisting of 413 members.We employed a partial least squares(PLS)modeling method using Smart-PLS to test our theoretical models and hypotheses.The results demonstrated that both work-and social-related ESM use in teams enhanced team agility by promoting knowledge expertise and coordination.However,the mediating effect of knowledge credibility was not significant. This study makes three important theoretical contributions.First,by exploring the impact of team ESM use on team agility,this study deepens the understanding of team ESM use value and enriches the research on team ESM use.Second,this study complements and advances the theory of transactive memory systems by examining the mediating effect of three dimensions of transactive memory systems on the relationship between team ESM use and team agility.Finally,this study expands the antecedents of team agility by exploring how team ESM use affects team agility through transactive memory systems. This study provides important practical insights for teams to effectively use ESM platforms to improve their agility.First,team managers must strategically guide team members in using ESM platforms to enhance knowledge specialization and coordination.For instance,team managers can encourage team members to engage in active professional communication,collaboration,knowledge exchange,and sharing of work experiences using ESM platforms.Second,team managers should strategically guide team members to use ESM platforms for social interaction to enhance knowledge specialization and coordination.For instance,team managers can encourage members to use ESM platforms for communication and interaction after work or to seek like-minded partners within the team.This can help them develop informal social networks and promote mutual understanding and collaborative interaction among team members. This study had some limitations.First,the sample size was relatively small.Second,this study overlooked the potential impact of team tenure on the transactive memory system.Third,data collection was based solely on a single questionnaire survey.These limitations provide directions for future research.关键词
