Abstract

To tackle the shortage of carbon sources and poor denitrification efficiency in rural domestic wastewater,a composite slow-release carbon source was developed and optimized using corn cob,rice husk,reed stalk,polyvinyl alcohol(PVA),and sodium alginate(SA).Preparation conditions and material ratios were systematically optimized through Plackett-Burman(PB)design,Box-Behnken design(BBD),and mixture-optimal design(MOD).The carbon release characteristics and denitrification performance of the composite carbon source were subsequently evaluated in batch and dynamic experiments.The optimal preparation conditions were determined as PVA 8.64 g,SA 2.41 g,rice husk 3.82 g,corncob 4.47 g,reed stem 6.06 g,freezing time 19.11 h,and crosslinking time 12 h.The cumulative carbon release reached 43.38±1.3 mg·g-1.The release profiles fitted well with first-order,Higuchi,Ritger-Peppas,and Weibull kinetic models,indicating that carbon diffusion and matrix erosion jointly governed the release process,resulting in stable slow-release performance.In denitrification experiments with an influent NO3--N concentration of 50 mg·L-1,the composite slow-release carbon source(RCR-PVA-SA)achieved a maximum removal efficiency of 90.8%and a removal rate of 0.079 mg·(g·h)-1after 10 days.Under dynamic conditions,when the hydraulic retention time(HRT)was 3 h,the average NO3--N removal efficiency remained as high as 87.9%.The RCR-PVA-SA exhibits stable carbon-release characteristics and excellent denitrification performance,serving as an efficient electron donor for the denitrification.This study provides valuable guidance for the preparation of natural slow-release carbon sources and the resource utilization of agricultural wastes.
