A novel continuous-flow self-circulating up-flow granular sludge fluidized bed process for the treatment of real domestic sewage

Abstract
Aerobic granular sludge(AGS)is promising,cost-effective,and efficient wastewater treatment technology,promising,cost-effective,and efficient wastewater treatment technology.To overcome the challenges of cultivating and maintaining AGS in continuous-flow systems,this study introduces a continuous-flow self-circulating up-flow granular sludge bed process(Zier process)with separated aeration for treating real domestic sewage.By adjusting key operational parameters,the nitrogen removal performance of the Zier process and its effect on AGS stability were investigated.The results showed that under a hydraulic retention time of 10 h,a self-circulation frequency of 29~58 times,and aan up flow rate of 11~18 m·h-1,the average effluent concentrations and were maintained at 5±3.4 mg·L-1 NH4+-N and 10±2.8 mg·L-1 TN,and 30±6.2 mg·L-1 COD.Furthermore,this process maintained the stability of the granular sludge,with the sludge concentration increasing from 5 080 mg·L-1 to 6 650 mg·L-1,the average sludge particle size at 209.6 μm,SVI at 50~60 mL·g-1,EPS content increasing from 26.05 mg·g-1 to 68.27 mg·g-1,LB-EPS content increasing from 3.98 mg·g-1 to 6.33 mg·g-1,and TB-EPS content increasing from 22.07 mg·g-1 to 61.94 mg·g-1.PN content increased from 21.26 mg·g-1 to 59.44 mg·g-1,and PS content increased from 4.79 mg·g-1 to 8.82 mg·g-1.PN/PS increased from 4.4 to 6.7.These metrics indicate excellent settleability and system stability,supporting long-term continuous operation.In summary,the Zier process demonstrates effective nitrogen removal and robust AGS maintenance.Its configuration and operational strategy offer a viable pathway for implementing continuous-flow aerobic granular sludge technology in real domestic wastewater treatment.关键词
