Purification effect on urban runoff using straw-type composite biological retention system

Abstract
Surface runoff pollution has emerged as a significant contributor to water pollution.The present study presents an integrated composite bioretention system that comprises a straw zone,an aquatic plant zone,and a biochar zone,designing to purify urban surface runoff for subsequent reuse in green water applications.The study investigated the removal efficiency for both conventional pollutants and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in surface runoff,along with an analysis of the microbial community structure within the substrate.The results indicated that the system effectively removed COD,TN,TP,and TSS with removal efficiency of 81.1,98.1,79.1,and 90.3%,respectively.The treated effluent met the standards outlined in"Water Quality for Landscape Environment"(GB/T 18921-2019)and demonstrated robust resistance to pollution and hydraulic loads.Notably,the alkali-modified straw zone played a pivotal role in pollutant removal,physically adsorbing and capturing suspended particles in water,while the released carbon source enhanced the total nitrogen removal capacity.This straw zone also boasted the highest microbial diversity within the system,with Proteobacteria and Firmicutes accounting for 54.3 and 21.9%of the relative abundances,respectively.Furthermore,the system demonstrated a strong removal capability for 16 priority PAHs,reducing the effluent's toxicity equivalent by 86.5%.Specifically,the straw zone was capable of completely removing four high-ring PAHs:benzo[a]pyrene(BaP),dibenzo[a,h]anthracene(DahA),benzo[g,h,i]perylene(BghiP),and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene(IcdP).Conversely,aquatic plants and biochar exhibit excellent removal efficacy for medium and low-ring PAHs.关键词
