Abstract

Groundwater serves as a vital source of drinking and irrigation water in the loess regions of Northwest China.As a densely populated area in southern Ningxia,Guyuan has not yet undergone a systematic assessment of its potential groundwater pollution risks.While previous studies have mainly focused on northern Ningxia,data for the southern region remain scarce.Based on 60 groundwater samples,this study employed the Nemerow Index,Heavy Metal Pollution Index(HPI),and health risk assessment models to systematically evaluate the pollution levels and health risks associated with eight elements,including Cr,As,and Hg.The results indicated that the overall groundwater quality in the study area falls under Class Ⅳ,with an average TDS of 1 350.9 mg·L-1.The average concentrations of As,Cr,and Mn are 4.39,29.87,and 45.77 μg·L-1,respectively.The Nemerow Index suggested moderate pollution,while the average HPI was 10.56,though localized points such as PS1-51-Lower reach 36.15,reflecting severe pollution.Health risk assessments revealed that the carcinogenic risks of Cr and As for adults and children are 8.037×10-6 a-1 and 3.863×10-6 a-1,respectively.Although these values are below the US EPA limits,they exceed the acceptable threshold(10-6 a-1)recommended by international agencies such as Sweden and the Netherlands,with children facing particularly significant risks.Hydrogen and oxygen isotope analysis combined with principal component analysis indicated that groundwater recharge primarily originated from atmospheric precipitation,whereas pollution elements such as Cr,Zn,and Mn mainly derived from regional copper-ore belts,coal mining,and agricultural activities.This study fills a gap in the multidimensional assessment of groundwater in densely populated loess regions,analyzes the differences in pollution characteristics compared to general loess regions,highlights pollution characteristics distinct from those in general loess areas,and provides a scientific basis for regional water-resource risk management and governance,with important implications for safeguarding drinking-water safety and promoting sustainable development.
