The Wealth Distribution Effects of Artificial Intelligence from a Global Perspective

Abstract
The impact of artificial intelligence(AI)on economic inequality has drawn extensive attention from the academic community.However,existing literature has insufficiently studied the wealth distribution effects of AI.This paper examines the impact of AI on wealth inequality and its underlying mechanisms.By utilizing two major international databases—the International Federation of Robotics(IFR)and the World Inequality Database(WID)—this study conducts a cross-country empirical analysis of the wealth distribution effects of AI across 65 countries globally from 1996 to 2019.The findings reveal that AI plays a role in widening wealth inequality.This conclusion remains valid after controlling for endogeneity issues and conducting various robustness tests.From an international comparative perspective,this effect is more pronounced in developing countries,countries in the demographic dividend period,and countries with low direct tax intensity.The results of the mechanism analysis indicate that AI exacerbates wealth inequality through mechanisms such as skill premiums,an increase in the capital income share,and a rise in the capital return rate.关键词
