Abstract

Regarding the velocity fluctuation of bypass pig in gas pipelines,the unstable bypass pig ve-locity was theoretically analyzed through mathematical modeling and numerical simulations.Then,a transparent experimental pipeline was designed to study the unsteady motion of bypass pig.The com-parison between experiments and simulations indicates that the unstable motion of bypass pig is influ-enced by gas compressibility and friction between bypass pig and the pipe inner wall.Specifically,the gas compressibility mainly determines the initial stoppage,the initial start process,and the velocity fluctuation of bypass pig,while the friction usually determines bypass pig speed after reaching steady motion.In addition,bypass pig may experience a stop-restart process when entering an abnormal friction area.When bypass pig enters the higher friction area,this stop-restart process appears as a deceleration-stop-restart process dominated by friction.However,when entering the lower friction ar-ea,it appears as an acceleration-fluctuation-stop-restart process influenced by gas compressibility.
