Exploration and practice of extracting helium from natural gas in Ordos Basin

Abstract

Helium is a rare gas,and extracting helium from natural gas is the most important way to produce helium.In this paper,the distribution of helium resources at home and abroad is introduced,the application status of two helium extraction technologies of cryogenic and membrane permeation separation is discussed,the helium resources of each gas field in the Ordos Basin and the research sta-tus of helium extraction technology in Dongsheng gas field and Daniudi gas field are investigated,and the helium extraction process from natural gas in Dongsheng gas field is analyzed.The simulation re-sults demonstrate that helium extraction via membrane separation features low energy consumption in super-large helium-bearing and helium-rich natural gas fields,boasting a high rate of return and dis-tinct technical and economic advantages.Although the helium extraction technology in China is gradu-ally mature,there are few industrial application cases,and it is suggested that the selection of the process should be combined with the characteristics of the gas field for economic and technological comparative analysis.In the future,relevant researchers can further explore the innovation of mem-brane separation materials to improve the efficiency of helium resource development.
