Treating Senile Dementia Based on"Decline of Nutrient Qi and Internal Invasion by Defensive Qi"

Abstract
The occurrence of dementia in the elderly is closely related to the balance between nutrient yin and defensive yang.Deficiency in qi and blood would lead to the disorder of generation and restriction between zang-fu organs,decline of nutrient qi and internal invasion by defensive qi,insufficient nourishment of brain marrow,and loss of spirituals,ultimately resulting in dementia.The mechanisms by which deficiency of nutrient qi leads to senile dementia can be summarized in three aspects:insufficiency of brain marrow,resulting in dysfunction of mental activity;deficiency and debility of heart blood,leading to inadequate nourishment of the mind;and obstruction by phlegm and blood stasis,obstructing the clear orifices.The mechanisms by which defensive qi internally invades and contributes to senile dementia can be summarized in two aspects:the interbinding of phlegm and fire,disturbing the mind;and prolonged blood stasis transforming into fire,thereby disrupting mental activity.In the clinical treatment of senile dementia in traditional Chinese medicine,attention should be directed to three approaches:benefiting qi and supplementing blood to regulate nutrient and defensive qi;replenishing essence and supplementing marrow to nourish nutrient and defensive qi;and resolving phlegm and dispersing blood stasis to free the circulation of nutrient and defensive qi.By restoring the mutually supportive,harmonious,and restraining balance between nutrient qi and defensive qi,senile dementia may be prevented and treated.关键词
