Improving Beam Quality in Fiber Lasers Through Output Fiber Tapering:Mode Filtering by a Tapered Section

Abstract
A novel method is proposed to optimize the beam quality of a fiber laser by fabricating a higher-order mode filter through tapering of the output fiber,and experimental verification is conducted.Firstly,the number of guided modes,the modal characteristics of the single-core tapered fiber,and the core mode cutoff conditions are simulated and analyzed based on the structural parameters of the laboratory fiber laser's output fiber.Subsequently,the output fiber is tapered using a tapering machine with different parameters,varying the waist diameter and taper length.Finally,the tapered fiber is spliced into the laser's output delivery fiber for power and beam quality testing.The results demonstrate that,with optimized tapering parameters,the beam quality factor(M2)is improved from 1.3 to below 1.1 at the expense of approximatedly 10%power loss,yielding a 1.3-fold increase in brightness.关键词
