THE IMPACT OF AGING AGRICULTURAL LABOR FORCE ON FARMERS'DIVERSIFICATION BEHAVIOR IN VEGETABLE FARMING

Abstract
This study investigates the impact of an aging agricultural workforce on farmers'crop diversification behavior and conducts a quantitative analysis of the mediating mechanism of social networks in this relationship.Based on field survey data from vegetable farmers in Hebei province and Tianjin municipality,this study employed multiple linear regression models,propensity score matching,and moderation models to systematically examine the impact of an aging agricultural workforce on farmers'crop diversification behaviors and the underlying mechanisms.The results were indicated as follows.(1)The aging of agricultural labor force had a significant negative effect on the planting diversity of vegetable farmers,and the higher the degree of diversification,the stronger the effect of aging,aging led to reduce the degree of diversified planting and the number of planting types;(2)The aging of the labor force had a significant inhibitory effect on the diversification efforts of larger-scale and higher-income farming households,but has no significant impact on small-and medium-scale farming households with low-to middle-income levels;(3)Social networks could alleviate the inhibitory effect of aging labor force on farmers'diversified planting behavior.In summary,this research suggests taking into account the reality of vegetable production in different regions and adopting differentiated strategies of vegetable diversification or specialized cultivation according to local conditions;adopting differentiated measures to safeguard vegetable production according to the actual situation of different types of farmers;and strengthening the construction of social networks to promote the exchange of information and the dissemination of technology.关键词
