Abstract

Marine microplastic pollution has spread across major global water bodies,with microplastics now commonly detected in aquatic organisms.Estuaries represent some of the regions most profoundly impacted by human activities.As transitional areas where freshwater and brackish water mix,microplastic contamination levels and distribution patterns in resident organisms can effectively reflect the state of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments across China.This study employed micro-infrared spectroscopy to conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses of microplastics in common aquatic organisms from the Yangtze River Estuary,while also investigating the influence of biological parameters,including body length and body mass,on microplastic abundance.The results revealed a total of 124 microplastic particles across 93 biological samples.The overall detection rate of microplastics in fish gastrointestinal tissue was 58.6%,with the highest rates observed in yellow crucian carp(Setipinna tenuifilis)and knifefish(Coilia nasus)at both 81.8%.Regarding physical characteristics,fibrous microplastics predominated,accounting for 94.2%and 91.7%of microplastics detected in gastrointestinal and muscle tissues,respectively.Colors were predominantly black,colorless,and blue,collectively exceeding 70%.Polymer composition analysis identified nine distinct polymer types,with polyethylene terephthalate(PET)constituting the dominant component(84.7%),followed by polyethylene(PE)(7.3%).Furthermore,significant interspecific variations were observed in microplastic contamination characteristics.This study represents the first systematic investigation of microplastic contamination in aquatic organisms inhabiting the Yangtze River Estuary.It also provides a systematic assessment of factors influencing microplastic abundance,offering foundational data and reference points for related studies in other Chinese water bodies and investigations of microplastic accumulation mechanisms.
