Enhancing flame retardancy of epoxy resin via synergistic combination of diethyl aluminum hypophosphite and a piperazine-based intumescent agent

Abstract
Flame-retardant epoxy resin(EP)composites were prepared via molding and thermal curing processes by incor-porating a synergistic intumescent flame-retardant system composed of 1,4-bis(methylenephosphonic acid diethyl)piper-azine(BDEMPP)and diethyl aluminum hypophosphite(ADP).The flame retardancy,thermal stability,and combus-tion behavior of the resulting EP composites were systematically investigated.The results demonstrate that the EP-4 for-mulation containing 6 wt%of BDEMPP/ADP blend at a 1∶1 mass ratio achieved a UL 94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxy-gen index of 28.9%.Cone calorimeter tests reveals that the incorporation of BDEMPP and ADP effectively suppressed heat and smoke release during combustion.Compared with pure EP,the total heat release and total smoke production of EP-4 are reduced by 33.0%and 15.2%,respectively.Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the synergistic sys-tem promotes early degradation of the EP matrix while reducing the maximum thermal degradation rate and increasing char residue.Thermogravimetric-infrared spectroscopy analysis confirms the formation of phosphorus-containing species capable of capturing free radicals and interrupting chain combustion reactions in the gas phase.Scanning electron micros-copy observations indicate that EP-4 formed a dense and uniform char layer during combustion,which effectively inhibits the exchange of heat,oxygen,and combustible volatiles,thereby enhancing flame retardancy.These findings indicate that BDEMPP and ADP exhibit excellent synergistic flame retardancy through combined gas-phase and condensed-phase mechanisms,offering a promising approach for developing high-performance flame-retardant epoxy materials.关键词
