Abstract
Ruyi Baoce is a Qing palace drama script adapted from the novel Pingyao zhuan(The Pacification of the Demons).A comparative examination of Ruyi Baoce and the forty-chapter edition of Pingyao zhuan reveals numer-ous differences in plot and narrative structure.These differences reflect a narrative transformation from the novel genre to the dramatic genre.In addition,the newly added role types,spoken passages,and stage directions in the drama highlight its performativity as a"piece for the stage"and indicate a shift in aesthetic focus.The adaptation of the Pingyao zhuan story in the Qing palace reflects the integration of court ideology and popular entertainment cul-ture,and presents a dual significance:on the one hand,extolling royal authority and maintaining bureaucratic gov-ernance,and on the other,entertaining the court and observing as well as appreciating popular customs,thereby demonstrating the unique artistic value and cultural connotations of Qing palace drama.关键词
