Regulatory Role and Mechanisms of Animal Enteric Nervous System on Intestinal Function

Abstract
Functions such as digestion and absorption,barrier function and immunity in the animal intestine,with their homeostasis,are crucial for the animal's growth,development and health.The homeostasis of ani-mal intestinal function is regulated by various pathways such as neural and humoral regulation.Among these,the enteric nervous system(ENS),which is a complex autonomous neural network composed of neurons with cell bodies located in the gastrointestinal wall and surrounding glial cells,is referred to as the"second brain".Recent studies have shown that the ENS plays a crucial regulatory role in digestive absorption,barrier function and immune responses in the animal intestine.This article first introduces the concept,composition and distri-bution of the ENS,and systematically summarizes the regulatory roles and mechanisms of different types of en-teric neurons and their neurotransmitters in intestinal digestion,absorption,barrier function and immunity.The aim is to provide new insights for improving the efficiency of nutrient digestion and absorption from feed,pro-moting animal growth,and enhancing overall health.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2026,38(5):3271-3279]关键词
