Antioxidant Mechanisms of Carnosic Acid and Its Applications in Livestock and Poultry Production

Abstract
Carnosic acid(CA),as the core active component in the extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis(rose-mary)and Salvia officinalis(sage),has attracted considerable attention in the field of livestock and poultry production owing to its excellent antioxidant,anti-inflammatory effects,and lipid metabolism-regulating capa-bility.This review systematically summarizes the antioxidant mechanisms of CA and its practical applications in livestock and poultry production.It particularly focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms through which CA alleviates oxidative stress,including direct scavenging of reactive oxygen species(ROS),modulation of the antioxidant enzyme system,activation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)signaling pathway,and inhibition of the nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)and mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)pathways.Furthermore,this article provides an in-depth assessment of the feasibility of utilizing CA as a green feed additive to enhance animal health status and improve production performance.The review aims to offer a scientific reference for the effective and rational application of CA in modern animal husbandry.[Chinese Jour-nal of Animal Nutrition,2026,38(5):3302-3311]关键词
