The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion:An Exploration of Acupoint Selection Rules of Acupuncture Treatment for Pulmonary Distention and Dyspnea

Abstract
Objective To explore the acupuncture patterns for pulmonary distention and dyspnea by analyzing the relevant entries in The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion regarding high-frequently used acupoints,acupoints for meridian tropism,acupoint sites,application of specific acupoints,tonifying and draining techniques,and retention time.Methods Microsoft Office Excel 2019 was used to extract relevant entries about pulmonary distention and dyspnea from The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion.A database was established for high-frequency acupoints,meridian tropism,specific acupoints,tonifying and draining techniques,and retention time,followed by frequency analysis.Results There were 52 entries on pulmonary distention and dyspnea in The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion,involving 71 therapeutic acupoints with a total frequency of 185.The top three acupoints used were Feishu(BL 13,14 times),Zusanli(ST 36,13 times),and Danzhong(CV 17,11 times).The top three meridians used were the hand taiyin lung meridian(17.30%),the foot yangming stomach meridian(16.22%),and the foot taiyang bladder meridian(15.14%).Acupoints located on the limbs were used most frequently,with 47 acupoints and 113 uses.Among specific acupoints,the five shu points were used most frequently,with 25 acupoints and 78 uses.For pulmonary distention,the draining method was primarily used,while for dyspnea,tonifying and draining techniques were selected based on the condition.For excess conditions,the draining method or draining followed by tonifying was used,and for deficiency conditions,the tonifying method or balanced tonifying and draining was applied.The book did not specify a particular retention time for acupuncture,emphasizing the importance of achieving the qi sensation.Conclusion In The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion,the treatment of pulmonary distention and dyspnea prioritizes Feishu as the primary acupoint,followed by Zusanli and Danzhong.Acupoints are mostly selected from the hand taiyin lung meridian,foot yangming stomach meridian,and foot taiyang bladder meridian.Acupoints located on the limbs are predominantly used.Among specific acupoints,the five shu points are most frequently applied.Tonifying and draining techniques are adjusted based on the condition.Regarding retention time,the emphasis is on achieving the qi sensation.关键词
