Abstract

To improve the power generation and azo dye decolorization efficiency of bioelectrochemical systems,this study introduced pomelo peel biochar(a widely available material)as the anode and flavonoid-rich Chinese herbal extracts as electron mediators(EMs)in microbial fuel cells(MFCs).The effects of these materials on electricity production and methyl orange dye in the wastewater treatment were systematically investigated.First,polypyrrole-modified pomelo peel biochar electrodes were prepared by three chemical activation agents—KOH,ZnCl2,and H3BO3—and the optimal anode was screened.Subsequently,extracts from three Chinese herbal plants—Scutellaria baicalensis,Ginkgo biloba leaves,and Pueraria lobata—were used as natural electron mediators(EMs),respectively,the materials with the best electron transfer performance were evaluated.Finally,the optimal combination obtained by the above analysis was used to continue the methyl orange decolorization experiment.Electrochemical characterization and performance analysis showed that the electrode modified with H3BO3 activator(PPy-PPCH3BO3-CC)exhibited the best performance.Furthermore,Scutellaria baicalensis extract proved to be the most effective electron mediator of the three tested.After adding Scutellaria baicalensis extract,the system achieved a maximum output voltage of(587±10)mV,a power density of 423.12 mW·m-2,a maximum Coulombic efficiency of(57.85±1.06)%,a COD removal rate of(77.45±0.92)%,a charge transfer internal resistance(Rct)of 7.15 Ω,and a methyl orange decolorization rate of(95.86%±1.12)%.This work demonstrated that readily available natural materials can significantly enhance the efficiency of bioelectrochemical systems in treating methyl orange wastewater.
