Notes on Words and Phrases in Plain Questions·Treatise on the True Words of the Golden Chamber
摘要
Abstract
In Plain Questions·Treatise on the True Words of the Golden Chamber,six key terms are prone to ambiguous interpretation and thus require thorough examination and clarification to restore their original meanings.Specifically:(1)"Shuying"signifies trans-porting and accepting,or conveying and receiving.It can be used to summarize the intimate interactive correspondence between yin and yang;(2)"Shoushou"is a synonymous compound meaning"reception"or"acceptance,"describing the mutual correspondence be-tween a zang-organ of a given five-phase element and natural phenomena sharing the same element;(3)Due to the ancient scholars' di-vergent understandings of the relationship between the"Zhenxing"(Saturn)and the seasons,the phrase"qi ying sishi,shang wei chenxing"should not be simplistically interpreted as"it corresponds to the long summer among the four seasons,and in the heavens it is the Zhenxing";(4)In the expression"yi ni yi cong,"the character"yi"means"either"or"or,"indicating a paratactic and alter-native relationship between"ni"(adverse)and"cong"(favorable);(5)In"cang zhi xin yi,"the term"xinyi"means"chest,""heart-mind,"or even"inner heart,"and can even be interpreted as"inward thought"or"inner self".Its meaning is identical to that of the term the heart;(6)The phrase"fei qi ren wu jiao"uses"Qiren"to refer specifically to a worthy and suitable candidate,rather than being simplistically rendered as"that person"or"those people."关键词
