Childhood unpredictability and depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescents:The mediating roles of unpredictability schemas and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies

Abstract
Objective:To examine the impact of childhood unpredictability on adolescent psychopathology and test the mediating roles of unpredictability schemas and maladaptive cognitive emotion-regulation strategies.Methods:A paper-and-pencil survey was administered to 1,026 middle school students from a public school in Jiangsu Prov-ince(ages 13～15,M=13.54,SD=0.57;44.1％female),using the Childhood Unpredictability Scale,Scale of Unpre-dictability Beliefs,the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire,the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale,and the Patient Health Questionnaire.Results:Childhood unpredictability,unpredictability schemas,maladaptive cognitive e-motion-regulation strategies,and depressive and anxiety symptoms were all significantly and positively correlated(0.328≤r≤ 0.807;P＜0.05).Unpredictability schemas and maladaptive cognitive emotion-regulation strategies each independently,as well as sequentially,mediated the association between childhood unpredictability and depres-sive and anxiety symptoms.Conclusion:Childhood unpredictability predicts adolescents' depressive and anxiety symp-toms,including both its direct effects and its indirect effects through unpredictability schemas and maladaptive cogni-tive emotion-regulation strategies.关键词
