An Inquiry into Marx's Ecological Critique on the"Soil Question"

Abstract
Marx's discussion on the"soil question"constitutes an important component of his ecological thought and even his historical materialism,yet it has not received sufficient attention from the academic community.Based on a review of Marx's texts from different periods,this paper systematically elucidates the ecological critique embedded in his discourse of the"soil question".Marx's ecological critique logically begins with the disenchantment of the"soil natural forces"discourse in classical economics,coupled with his appropriation of soil science and focus on the application of agricultural technology.Through his inheritance and critique of classical political economy,Marx's understanding of the"soil question"shifted from a technical level to a level of production relations.He revealed how capitalist relations of production cause a"metabolic rift"between humanity and the soil,thereby forming an ecological thought based on historical materialism.Furthermore,he proposed a practical strategy that aligns with the intrinsic requirements of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature.This strategy takes the transformation of the capitalist system as a prerequisite,is grounded in the establishment of a rational agriculture led by"associated producers",and achieves the unification of social and ecological revolutions.Marx's discourse on the"soil question"not only constitutes a crucial thread in his ecological critique but also provides theoretical resources and practical inspiration for understanding the institutional roots of the contemporary ecological crisis,transcending the logic of capital,and ultimately realizing the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature.关键词
