摘要

Abstract

Under the dual pressures of global climate change and resource scarcity, sustainable development has become a central concern in the transformation of the textile industry. As the international community intensifies scrutiny of carbon emissions, water consumption, and chemical pollution, the traditional industry's high-energy,high-pollution production model faces mounting pressure to reform.Major markets in Europe and the United States have introduced green trade barriers and sustainable supply chain regulations, compelling textile enterprises worldwide to accelerate their transition. These external constraints have,in turn, catalyzed a broader strategic reconfiguration:sustainability is no longer a reactive measure but an active means by which the industry rebuilds competitive advantage and strengthens its position in the international market.Especially for major textile-exporting countries, meeting increasingly stringent international sustainability standards while simultaneously upgrading the industrial value chain is a critical issue for their industrial development. The sustainability transition of the global textile industry raises substantive questions in industrial economics, including structural transformation, regulatory change, and international competitiveness.Despite growing scholarly interest, the existing literature does not systematically compare how domestic and international research communities conceptualize this transition, nor does it adequately examine the institutional and technological logics that drive each community's research agenda. To address this gap, this study conducts a comparative bibliometric analysis of domestic and international scholarship, with the aim of mapping the research landscape, tracing its developmental logic, and informing strategic and policy decisions through an integrated economic and technological lens.Drawing on CiteSpace, the study analyzes literature from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)and the Web of Science(WoS)Core Collection spanning 1999 to 2025,situating the findings within the broader context of global sustainability governance. The analysis employs statistical profiling, collaboration network mapping,co-citation analysis, keyword co-occurrence,and thematic evolution tracking, providing a multi-dimensional and longitudinal view of how scholarly attention in this field shifted over more than two decades. There are four major findings.First, domestic research correlates closely with national strategic priorities and demonstrates a strong policy orientation, while international research is marked by greater interdisciplinary integration and a more pronounced technology orientation. This divergence is rooted in the differing positions of domestic and international textile industries within the global value chain,as well as the distinct logics of industrial upgrading that characterize each context.Second, domestic collaboration networks are generally dispersed and regionally concentrated, with industry-academia-research coordination remaining to be improved. In international research,Chinese scholars and institutions hold a dominant position. In recent years, cooperation with countries along the Belt and Road Initiative has strengthened, but cross-border collaboration remains limited.Third, domestic research clusters around industrial strategy, reflecting an institutional logic shaped by government discourse, whereas international research tracks technological pathways, reflecting market-driven innovation imperatives.Although domestic and international research approaches to sustainable textiles differ, both have undergone three progressive stages within the three common thematic areas of ecological improvement,low-carbon applications, and industrial upgrading.Fourth,in recent years the two streams show a discernible convergence, both orienting toward smart manufacturing, the circular economy, and digital supply chains, though they approach these themes from different disciplinary and institutional starting points. This study is the first to systematically compare the evolutionary differences in domestic and international research on textile sustainability within an industrial economics framework.Drawing on 4 979 articles spanning 26 years and situating the findings against major policy events, the study explicates the formation mechanisms and convergence logic of two distinct developmental pathways:the domestically policy-driven approach and the internationally technology-driven approach. This comparative framework provides a theoretical foundation for China's textile industry to formulate differentiated competitive strategies, strengthen collaborative innovation, and respond to international green trade barriers, including instruments. On this basis, the study advances recommendations across five domains:building institutional capacity for cross-regional research collaboration;subjecting industrial policies to forward-looking evaluation with respect to supply chain resilience and carbon border risks;directing research toward frontier domains such as wearable energy textiles and microplastic mitigation;developing integrated supply chain infrastructure connecting carbon accounting, clean production, and blockchain-enabled recycling systems;and orienting future scholarship toward low-carbon methodologies, advanced materials, circular economy models, and AI-integrated digital supply chain management.
