Effect of natural Fe2+-rich ion-modified mineral water on the mordanting effect and color gamut of silk fabrics dyed with sappanwood

Abstract
Conventional metal-salt mordants generate acidic effluents that impose adverse impacts on human health and the environment.This study therefore investigated the feasibility of using a natural mordant in place of traditional metal-based mordants to achieve more sustainable dyeing of silk fabrics with sappanwood dye. Mineral water from Medicinal Spring Mountain in Wudalianchi,China,was selected as the source of the natural mordant.After stabilization with ascorbic acid,it was directly applied to the dyeing of silk fabrics with sappanwood dye.A comparative study was carried out between the dyeing process using the natural mordant and the conventional mordanting process based on inorganic iron salts.The optimal dyeing and mordanting methods were determined,and the stabilization treatment of the natural mordant,together with the adsorption behavior of the dye on silk and its color-development characteristics,was examined.In addition,the dyed samples were evaluated in terms of color characteristics,color gamut,colorimetric values,and color fastness. The optimal dyeing conditions for silk fabrics dyed with sappanwood using the natural mordant were a dyeing temperature of 80℃,a dyeing time of 40 min,and a dye bath pH of 6.Stabilization with ascorbic acid was necessary to improve the stability of the natural mordant,and the optimal ascorbic acid concentration was 2.5 g/L.After treatment,the mordant remained suitable for use after storage for 1-7 d.Pre-mordanting was identified as the most effective mordanting method for this natural mordant.The optimal pre-mordanting conditions were a mordanting temperature of 80℃,a mordanting time of 15 min,a natural mordant concentration of 34.01 mg/L,and a sappanwood dye concentration of 1 g/L.Under the optimized conditions,13 distinct colors were obtained by adjusting the concentrations of the mordant and the sappanwood dye.Among them,nine corresponded to Pantone color standards,and ten were consistent with traditional Chinese colors.The color gamut of the dyed fabrics was characterized by L*=30.30-78.97,a*=5.80-20.47,b*=2.33-40.00,C*=10.11-44.93,and h°=13.34-62.90°.The dyed fabrics exhibited rubbing,soaping,and light fastness ratings of at least Grade 3,meeting the requirements for the routine use of silk fabrics. The results demonstrate that mineral water from Medicinal Spring Mountain in Wudalianchi,China,after stabilization with ascorbic acid,can serve as an effective natural mordant for dyeing silk fabrics with Sappanwood.By adjusting the concentrations of the mordant and the dye,the color gamut of sappanwood dyeing can be effectively expanded.The resulting dyed colors show both correspondence with traditional Chinese colors and practical application value.These findings indicate that the modified natural mordant has considerable potential to replace conventional iron-salt mordants in textile dyeing applications.关键词
