A Study on the Impact of Parental Support on Offspring's Fertility Intentions:An Empirical Analysis Based on the 2022 China Family Panel Studies Data

Abstract
Exploring individuals'fertility intentions is essential for understanding the fundamental drivers of demographic structural transformation,as such intentions are shaped by external socioeconomic condi-tions,familial relationships,and personal value systems.Against the backdrop of China's severe demo-graphic challenges-including persistently low fertility rates,accelerating population aging,and declining working-age populations-examining how parental intergenerational support influences offspring's fertil-ity intentions,and identifying the actual support needs of contemporary individuals of childbearing age,is critical to advancing high-quality population development.Drawing on data from the 2022 China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),this study investigates how distinct forms of parental intergenerational support-namely,economic support,caregiving support,and emotional support-affect offspring's fertility inten-tions.Employing an Ordinary Least Squares(OLS)regression framework-with individual-and house-hold-level characteristics included as control variables-we assess both the existence and magnitude of these effects,as well as the underlying mechanisms through which they operate.The empirical results re-veal that different types of parental support exert heterogeneous effects on fertility intentions:caregiving support and emotional support significantly and positively influence offspring's intended fertility,whereas economic support exhibits no statistically significant association.Moreover,these effects vary systemati-cally across subgroups defined by age,urban-rural residence,and household per capita income-high-lighting substantial heterogeneity in responsiveness to intergenerational support.Consequently,fertility-enhancing policies must move beyond one-size-fits-all approaches and instead be carefully tailored to reflect the diverse socioeconomic contexts and support needs of individuals of childbearing age.关键词
