Effects of willpower on school adjustment among middle school students migrating with their families

Abstract
Objective To explore the effects of willpower on school adjustment among middle school students migrating with their families,and provide empirical evidence for effectively helping them adapt to the school environment.Methods Data of 1 279 migrant middle school students with matched IDs were selected from the 2014 baseline database and 2015 follow-up database of the China Education Panel Survey(CEPS).Data on willpower,teachers'support,emotional control,and school adjustment were collected.Correlations among variables were analyzed,the mediating effect of emotional control between willpower and school adjustment was examined,and the moderating effect of teachers'support in this relationship was investigated.Results Willpower,teachers'support,emotional control,and school adjustment were significantly and positively correlated with each other(r=0.12 to 0.39,P<0.01).Willpower positively predicted school adjustment(β=0.14,t=5.41,P<0.01);emotional control played a partial mediating role between willpower and school adjustment,with a mediating effect value of 0.04(95%CI:0.03 to 0.07),accounting for 28.57%of the total effect.The interaction between willpower and teachers'support had a significant predictive effect on emotional control(β=-0.06,t=2.24,P<0.05).Specifically,willpower affected school adjustment through emotional control only when teachers'support was at a low level.Conclusion Willpower can influence school adjustment among migrant middle school students via emotional control,and this effect is most significant when teachers'support is insufficient.Parents and educators should attach importance to cultivating positive qualities such as willpower in migrant children to help them effectively cope with school adjustment problems.关键词
