The Generative Context,Logical Framework,and Specific Strategies of Wei Yuan's Military Strengthening Thought

Abstract
Wei Yuan explored a path of self-strengthening to resolve the Qing court's perilous situation,forming a military strengthening thought uniquely characteristic of its era.Confronted with three practical contradictions—the inherent flaws in the military system,the practical dilemmas of defending against foreign incursions,and the temporal limitations of military governance concepts—Wei Yuan constructed a military strengthening thought system centered on"learning the adanced techniques of the foreigners to resist them."This system was underpinned by three core logics:the cognitive logic of progressing from understanding the foreigners to con-trolling them,the historical logic of integrating tradition with modernity,and the practical logic of coordinating internal cultivation with external defense.Ultimately,he established a practical military strengthening plan centered on local adaptation,utility orientation,and countering enemy strengths.This achieved a theoretical breakthrough in traditional military thought,laid the framework for modern na-tional defense construction,and sparked a spiritual awakening of self-strengthening against foreign aggression.It provided crucial intel-lectual resources for modern Chinese military reform and the path of building a strong military with Chinese characteristics.关键词
