Sharing Roots,One Spirit in Dual Forms:On the Urban-Rural Metonymy of the"Zhen-Jia Baoyu"Tradition in Su Tong's Good Weather
摘要
Abstract
Su Tong's new novel Good Weather engages in a dialogue rich with contemporary significance with the narrative tradition of contrasting"Zhen-Jia Baoyu"from Dream of the Red Chamber. The work transposes the motif of"one body with dual manifestations"-originally associated with aristocratic families-onto the life stories of two women both named Zhaodi in a semi-urban area, thereby reflecting the dialectical tensions and entanglements between urban and rural relations in the process of modernity.Su Tong's narrative strategy not only intentionally shifts the narrative space from cultured, elite lineages to the marginalized countryside but also employs techniques such as identity construction, naming politics, and prefiguration of fate, infusing traditional narrative energy with new critical depth.Although this attempt cannot be readily interpreted through ready-made theories, beneath its seemingly simple plot lies a profound literary consciousness in dialogue with classical tradition.Only by tracing its cultural roots can we glimpse how the author, through the ingenious construction of"one spirit in dual forms"establishes an aesthetic pursuit of folk narrative amid urban-rural transformation and ordinary daily life.In summary,by considering Su Tong's narrative model of"sharing roots and one spirit"in integrating traditional resources, one may observe how the narrative wisdom of Dream of the Red Chamber finds new voice in the Good weather of Xianshui Pond, leaving a thought-provoking case study of how literary tradition responds to modern issues.关键词
