Forms and Genealogy of Paradise in Traditional Chinese Literature
摘要
Abstract
From the mythical"Kunlun"in pre-Qin times to the"Peach Blossom Spring(Taohuayuan)"of the Wei-Jin period, and further to spatial images like"Flower-Fruit Mountain(Huaguoshan)","Liangshan Marsh(Liangshanbo)",and"Grand View Garden(Daguanyuan)"in Ming-Qing novels, paradise spaces in traditional Chinese literature exhibit a distinct genealogy. These spaces often harbor the narrative structures of"Fall from Paradis"or"Return to Paradise"and manifest in different forms across historical epochs:Kunlun represents the primal,divine-human coexistent natural paradise;Peach Blossom Spring constructs a self-sufficient,escapist rural paradise;while the paradises in Ming-Qing novels display more complex spatial features and cultural connotations.By mapping this genealogy of paradise in traditional Chinese literature, the evolution of the Chinese imagination regarding ideal dwelling spaces and its underlying cultural psychological structure can be revealed.关键词
