Study on the Seismic Performance and Failure Modes of Socket-Type H-Section Steel Column Bases

Abstract
Socket-type steel column bases require minimal on-site wet operations and can achieve a rigid connection between the steel column and the foundation,aligning with the development of prefabricated construction.However,there is currently a lack of research on the mechanical properties of socket-type column bases,which limits their widespread application.This study combines experimental testing and finite element analysis to investigate the seismic performance and failure modes of socket-type column bases.Horizontal cyclic loading tests was conducted on two types of socket-type column bases,S1(with studs)and S2(without studs).The results revealed different crack propagation patterns and final failure modes for the two specimens.The average positive and negative stiffness of specimen S1 was 19.7%higher than that of S2,but the ultimate load of S1 was 8.0%lower than that of S2.Furthermore,the presence of studs improved the energy dissipation capacity of the column base,but weakened the bonding performance at the new-to-old concrete interface,resulting in reduced ductility of the specimen.To further analyze the failure modes in the socket-type region and overcome the limitation of direct observation in the experiment,numerical simulations of the specimens were conducted using the nonlinear finite element software ABAQUS.A comparison was made between the experimental and simulation results in terms of the load-displacement curves,failure phenomena,and characteristic values of the skeleton curves,which validated the accuracy of the finite element model.The failure modes of the two types of column bases were analyzed,and the reason for the weakened load transfer at the new-to-old concrete interface was explained,providing design recommendations for the practical application of socket-type column bases.关键词
