Abstract

The molten pool dimensions in the laser powder bed fusion(LPBF)process significantly affect the final part quality,and their accurate prediction is essential for improving the process stability.However,there is currently no explicit predictive model that directly relates the molten pool dimensions to the processing parameters,and the process map remains heavily reliant on experiments,which are both costly and inefficient.In this study,an analytical method is used to investigate the temperature field and defect formation during the LPBF process of Ti6Al4V.A predictive model is established for the molten pool dimensions under low to medium energy densities,an identification method is proposed for the typical porosity defects in the LPBF process,and a criterion is presented for determining the optimal process window.In addition,a power-velocity(P-V)process map is constructed.The results show that the error between the proposed prediction method and the instantaneous or moving Gaussian surface heat source model is within 10%,and the computational efficiency of the proposed method is increased by 567 times that of the instantaneous Gaussian surface heat source model and 12 711 times that of the moving one.The developed P-V map exhibits good agreement with previously published results.This work provides a theoretical basis and valuable reference for achieving high-quality LPBF manufacturing.
