Flow Structure and Turbulence Characteristics Under the Impact of Rigid Vegetation

Abstract
This paper investigated the turbulent characteristics of flow through rigid vegetation using laboratory physical model experiments,with cylindrical wooden rods simulating rigid plant canopies.The effects of vegetation on vertical velocity profiles and turbulence structures were systematically examined under two submergence ratios(submerged and emergent conditions)and different hydrodynamic regimes(regular waves and wave-dominated wave-current interactions).The results revealed that vegetation significantly attenuated flow velocities via form drag,with reduction rates of 14%~32%under regular waves,increasing with vegetation density.Vegetation exerted dual effects on turbulence:canopy-scale shear turbulence generated at the top of submerged vegetation contributed 20%~38%to total turbulent kinetic energy(TKE),while stem-scale wake turbulence accounted for 26%~77%.Conversely,turbulence was suppressed by 8%~40%at certain depths due to reduced shear and enhanced energy dissipation within the canopy.Under wave-dominated wave-current conditions,velocity and turbulence patterns closely mirrored those observed under regular waves alone.Overall,rigid vegetation significantly altered turbulence characteristics by redistributing velocity and TKE.关键词
