Dilemma and Turning Point:the Yanzihe Conference and the Strategic Evolution of the Fourth Counter-Encirclement Campaign in the Hubei-Henan-Anhui Soviet Area

Abstract
The strategic evolution of the Fourth Counter-Encirclement Campaign in the Hubei-Henan-Anhui Soviet Area has gone through a process of blind attack under the influence of"left-ist"errors,followed by the establishment of an inward contraction strategy at the Yanzihe Confer-ence,and then the decision on the turning of the outward breakthrough at the Huangchaifan Con-ference.In the early stages of the Fourth Counter-Encirclement Campaign,the Fourth Front Red Army,guided by the"offensive route"doctrine,fell into a strategic passive position.By mid-to-late September,the core areas of the Soviet area had fallen successively,forcing the main force to retreat and defend the narrow terrain of Yanzihe.Faced with the dual dilemma of compressed space for internal operations and the risks of external guerrilla warfare,the Yanzihe Conference de-bated three proposals:"exiting Qianshan and Taihu to fight guerrilla warfare","returning to the Huang'an-Macheng Base Area",and"going out of Pinghan Railway to the west".Ultimately,the strategy of"returning to the Huang'an-Macheng Base Area"was adopted,aiming to regroup forces by relying on the established Soviet base.This decision,through strategic contraction and an adjustment in the leadership's mindset,laid the practical groundwork and completed the psy-chological preparation for the Huangchaifan Conference one month later,which resolved to break out westward along the Pinghan Railway.As a key node in the chain of strategic evolution,the Yanzihe Conference served as a distinct bridge between past and future in the Fourth Counter-En-circlement Campaign.It provides a classic case study for understanding the shift in the CPC's mili-tary strategy during the Land Revolution period,moving from dogmatism towards seeking truth from facts.关键词
