Effect of Aluminum Powder Particle Size on the Thermal Decomposition Behavior of HMX-Based Mixed Systems

Abstract
Aluminum powder is commonly used as an additive in energetic materials due to its high energy density.In order to investigate the influence mechanism of aluminum powder particle size on the thermal behavior of HMX-based energetic materials,differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)was employed to study HMX-based mixed systems with alumi-num powder particle sizes of 5,10 and 100 μm.Combining the self-accelerating decomposition temperature(SADT)cal-culation method,Kissinger method,and model fitting method based on Coats-Redfern method,the influences of aluminum powder particle size on the thermal decomposition of the mixed system were revealed from apparent activation energy,heat release,and pyrolysis mechanisms.Finally,a mechanism model for predicting the relationship between aluminum powder particle size and apparent activation energy of the mixed system was obtained.Calculation results show that the apparent ac-tivation energies of the HMX-based mixed systems with aluminum powder particle sizes of 5,10 and 100 μm are 228.09,219.92 and 203.60 kJ/mol,which indicates that the apparent activation energy of the mixed system decreases with the increase of aluminum powder particle size,and this effect is most prominent when aluminum powder particles transition from nanometer to micrometer scale.The research findings provide theoretical support for the risk assessment and safe use of Al/HMX-based energetic materials.关键词
