Multiple Constraints of Main Clause Verb Types on Object Clauses

Abstract
Existing studies on object clause constructions have primarily focused on the subcategorization of main clause verbs and the syntactic-semantic properties of the object clauses themselves,paying less attention to the interaction and constraints between the two.This study demonstrates that the semantic types of main clause verbs exert multiple constraints on the syntax and semantics of object clauses.When the main clause verb exerts weak control,the integration between the main clause and the object clause is loose;consequently,the object clause exhibits diverse features of tense,aspect,and mood,representing either events or states.Conversely,when the main clause verb exerts strong intentional control,the integration is tight.This results in convergent syntactic features of the object clause,with restricted tense-aspect-mood markers and weakened eventivity.Furthermore,the reference alignment between the main clause subject and the object clause subject—whether they are coreferential—syntactically and semantically constrains the overt or covert realization of the object clause subject.Superimposed with various pragmatic factors,these elements form a multi-layered mechanism of constraints.关键词
